What Is Self-Cleaning Glass And How Does It Work?

No matter how much you clean them, your windows seem to always get dirty. This means you either have to pay someone to clean them or scrub them yourself. What if your windows could clean themselves? Sounds impossible, right?

Well, self-cleaning windows are a real thing.

With this special type of glass, your windows can clean themselves so you don’t have to. But what is self-cleaning glass and how does it work exactly? Let’s take a closer look.

What is self-cleaning glass?

Whilst at first glance, the self-cleaning glass looks no different to your standard pane of glass, in fact, self-cleaning has an ultra-thin outer coating of titanium dioxide layer on the outside.

How does it work?

So, how does self-cleaning glass actually work? It’s time to get technical.

Firstly, the titanium dioxide coating is a photocatalyst, meaning it is activated by UV light. When UV rays shine on the titanium dioxide surface, it releases electrons.

The water molecules in the air interact with these electrons, turning them into hydroxyl radicals.

These hydroxyl radicals attach dirt on the glass surface, breaking them down into other substances such as water and carbon dioxide.

Secondly, unlike standard glass, self-cleaning glass is hydrophilic. This means that it is water-loving, thanks to the hydroxyl radicals. So, when it rains, the water droplets spread evenly across the glass, wiping it clean.
